One of Bourdieu's primary concerns is to overcome dichotomies in social theory, such as micro/macro, material/symbolic, empirical/theoretical, objective/subjective, public/private, structure/agency. Overall then, Bourdieu’s theory of culture understands social behaviour as an economic (but not economistic; see Brubaker 1985: 749) endeavour which most often is misperceived as purely disinterested or value-driven by those involved in it. Now, how can this theory of culture help to understand and to explain the illicit trade in Such problems as whether Weber's class theory is appropriate for the history of the European middle class, whether Pierre Bourdieu's concept of cultural capital is useful for an analysis of intellectuals, or whether Marx's theory can be applied to modern revolutions—and whether all of these can explain more than just national cases—have been the focus of interest thus far. Pierre Bourdieu developed the cultural deprivation theory. This theory implies that higher class cultures are better when compared to working class cultures. Because of this perceived superiority, people from upper and middle classes believe people who are working class are themselves to blame for the failure of their children in education.
